We went on our annual cabin trip over super bowl weekend. alex, drew, and myself laughed almost all of the way there joking about the snow and how the weather channel was labeling it as the "storm of the century". HEADING DEEPER INTO V.A. WE REALIZE THE "STORM OF THE CENTURY" WAS NO JOKE.
once we were very close to the cabin on the old, rarly used backroads the snow was too deep for the passport. we were still about 1.5 miles from the cabin. so around midnight we grabbed the necessary gear and started walking through knee deep snow towards the cabin. i had on some vans skate shoes and blue jeans and a pretty light jacket. it was still snowing like crazy. when we got to the cabin we were soaked from sweat and heavy snow fall. after we got the fire stoked up and dried off a bit the mood lightened and around 2:30 we hit the sleeping bags.
dark road with no tracks.
the passports final resting place after the snow proved to be too deep. time to walk!!
fire is good!!!!
when we woke up saturday morn the snow was still falling pretty heavy. we shot some guns, ate some BBQ, and drank some cold beers throughout the day just like any good ol' boy would. we also gathered some much needed firewood because it was gonna be like 10 degrees for the next two nights. we tried to do some survivor man shit too by making some snow shoes out of white pine braches. it actually worked really good until your lashings loosened up and then it was hard to keep them on your feet. we eventually got tired of fooling with them and burned them in the fire later.
ahhh, the cabin like we've never seen it before. snowy!!
survivor man snow shoes!!
alex checking for phone signal using snow shoes.
on sunday we were pretty much out of food and we were totally out of beer so we had to make a run for buena vista for some provisions. we went into food lion and bought a few things and on our way back we noticed some footprints in the snow behind the building. we pulled around back and there it is. the perfect bunny slope to test out alex's new snowboard he bought for the trip. it was a beautiful field with hardly anyone else there. we session this spot for a few hours and we all got sorta dialed on the snowboard. we pack up just a little before dusk to head back to the cabin. we celebrate our new learned board skills with cold tecates and yuenglings.

shreding the gnar!
all smiles dawg!
monday morning we get up and head out for another day of fun. well, fun after we gather some more wood for the fire. we hike up a wide trail that probably was an old forest road and shred some gnar on the snowboard. it was pretty epic. not too many people around here are lucky enough to get to ride on fresh virgin powder in the middle of the woods with no one else around. we all took some good falls but nobody got wadded up too bad. i was beat when we finished. it was a lot of work hiking up the mountain in knee deep snow after every run to give the board to the next guy in line. (next time i'm gonna have my own board)
one of my runs on fresh powder.
.good times.
tuesday morn we rolled out of the bed pretty early to more snow showering down. we had to pack up though and get going by lunch. after we packed up some gear and cleaned up the cabin we made the drive home with no problems. i was starving, so we stopped by my favorite gas station, sheetz. i ate four hot dogs and two doughnuts, had a redbull and a big water. i think i have a fat kid inside of me somewhere. anyway, hope you enjoyed my rambles.
later,
joel
...the trail back to the passport
sounds like a good time. i can tell you that the people who were not vacationing, but actually living in, the "storm of the century" were not nearly as thrilled as you :)
